CHICAGO, Nov. 2, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Actor and philanthropist Isaiah Washington will be in Chicago on November 4, 2010, to attend "Water for Everyone: Empowering African Villages," an exclusive fundraiser benefiting Washington's charity, the Gondobay Manga Foundation, and his ongoing efforts to provide economic support to the people of Sierra Leone.
The event is being organized and hosted by two Chicago professionals: Glenn Murray, president of 220 Communications, and T. Shawn Taylor, president of Treetop Consulting Inc. Additional sponsors include the Capital Management Group, President Shawn Baldwin; The Dinizulu Law Group, President Yao Dinizulu; and the League of Black Women, President Sandra Finley.
Attendees will be treated to wine tasting, including South African wines imported by Heritage Link Brands, gourmet appetizers and chocolates, and special prize raffles, including a cruise for two valued at $1,500.
Washington (who played Dr. Preston Burke on TV's Grey's Anatomy) has teamed up with the organization Waves 4 Water to provide water filters and construct rain water catching devices to promote sustainable water systems in some of the poorest villages in the world. Waves 4 Water has been involved at ground zero of disaster relief efforts in places such as Bali, Sumatra and Haiti to make drinking water safe again for earthquake and tsunami victims and villages affected by diseases such as cholera.
The actor was inspired to found his charity after performing a DNA test and learning of his ancestral ties to the Mende Temne people of Sierra Leone. On April 26, 2010, he was sworn in as a Sierra Leonean citizen, becoming the first African American to obtain dual citizenship based on his DNA connection.
Everyday, the lives of Sierra Leonean villagers are endangered by organisms in their drinking water, which resembles chocolate milk. Thousands of deaths are attributed to unsafe water each year.
Money raised will go toward the purchase of water filters valued at about $20 each developed by Waves 4 Water to allow for fast and easy purification of unsafe well water. For tickets, go to http://waterforeveryone.eventbrite.com/.
